At St John Rigby we recognise the contribution of PE to the health and well-being of our children. We believe that an innovative, varied PE curriculum and extracurricular opportunities have a positive influence on the concentration, attitude and academic achievement of all our children.

Our Primary School Sport’s Funding will enable us to continue and extend our provision through providing more opportunities for active play and learning, employing additional sports professionals, entering into more competitive sports competitions and training our staff to deliver in-house quality PE sessions.

What is the Sports Premium?

Each year the government (Departments for Education, Health and Culture, Media and Sport) provide funding to all schools to give more children access to high quality PE lessons and sporting opportunities, supporting both their physical and mental wellbeing. On average, each school receives £8,000 plus an extra £5 per pupil – for St John Rigby, this will mean approximately £17, 00 - £18000 per year. The money can only be spent on sport and PE provision in schools.

Purpose of the funding

The school sport and activity action plan sets out the government’s commitment to ensuring that children and young people have access to at least 60 minutes of sport and physical activity per day. It recommends 30 minutes of this is delivered during the school day (in line with the Chief Medical Officers guidelines).

Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE, physical activity and sport they provide. This includes any carried forward funding.

Schools have the freedom to decide how to spend the money but should ensure the PE and sport premium is used to:

• Develop or add to the PE, physical activity and sport that the school provides
• Build capacity and capability within the school to ensure that improvements made now are sustainable and will benefit pupils joining the school in future years

There are 5 key indicators that schools should expect to see improvement across:

• The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity 
• The profile of PE and sport is raised across the school as a tool for whole-school improvement
• Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
• Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
• Increased participation in competitive sport
